The new linear creekway system in San Antonio happens to include the old dry creek bed behind my neighborhood. We used to ride our bikes down in there all the time growing up, so the city's decision to buy up the land and build a paved pathway is like sanctioning a part of my childhood. Hurrah!
But more importantly, the city's plan to put in miles of public trailspace is a fantastic idea. Not just for the obvious reasons that it adds to the public goods offered to residents, but also for its implications in transportation and capital projects for the city.
Along with the river improvement project, the creekways also signal a new willingness of San Antonio residents to invest tax dollars in big-vision public works. This program was ratified by voters and utilizes a 1/8 percent sales tax for funding.
